Greece

Bet365 and Play’n Go are the latest iGaming suppliers to receive licenses to operate in Greece, following Betsson, which announced its approval on Monday.

The granting of the licenses puts the companies amongst the first to be licensed amongst the Greek regulatory body, the Hellenic Gaming Commission, since submissions opened last October.

The licenses run for a term of seven years, and holders must pay a 35 per cent tax on gross gaming revenue.

They are part of controversial and long-discussed new gambling rules submitted by the Greek Ministry of Finance to the European Commission in January 2020, after the law was passed in the country’s parliament the October before.

Under the law, separate licenses were made available for online sports betting and other online games, priced at €3 million and €2 million, respectively.

Additionally, it placed stringent controls on random number generator (RNG) games, which would be limited to maximum stakes of €2, with maximum profit per gaming session to be limited to €5,000. Jackpot games were limited to paying out a maximum of €50,000.

On the part of Play’n Go, Magnus Olsson, Head of Sales and Account Management explained, “Regulatory changes are a constant in the global gaming industry and we welcome the new clarity provided by the Hellenic Gaming Commission”.

“To truly enjoy a gaming experience”, he said, “players must feel safe. And that’s why we’re only too happy to tailor our titles to ensure they comply with all local rules in regulated markets all over the world”.
